Top 20 All-Time Cash Domain Sales Reported by DNJournal.com (2003 – Present)

Note from the Editor:
DNJournal began tracking and verifying domain aftermarket sales in late 2003. We do not include pre-2003 sales in this list, as many of those were either non-cash deals (often involving company stock with volatile value) or unverified claims, sometimes made to artificially inflate the perceived value of a domain or TLD.

This list includes only pure domain name sales, not those tied to developed websites or businesses. When a domain is sold as part of a website or company, the additional value of associated assets (e.g., customer base, tech stack, product revenue) cannot be separated from the domain’s value alone—similar to how building a home adds value to land in real estate.

Last Updated: October 30, 2024
The list was updated following the $14 million sale of Rocket.com, which now ranks #4. Sales of this magnitude are rare and the list is updated only when new transactions qualify.

⚠️ Special Considerations & Clarifications:

  • 360.com: In 2015, Qihoo (a Chinese tech company) reportedly acquired the domain from Vodafone for $17 million, according to anonymous sources. However, this has never been officially confirmed by either party, so the sale is not included.
  • Shoes.com: Walmart reportedly acquired the domain in 2017 for $9 million, as uncovered through bankruptcy court filings. However, because minor domains, trademarks, and social handles were included, it’s not listed as a pure domain-only sale, though it’s worth noting.
  • Excluded Sales: Many high-value “domain sales” often cited online—such as Insurance.com ($35.6M), VacationRentals.com ($35M), and PrivateJet.com ($30.18M, cash + stock)—were actually full business acquisitions. These are excluded from DNJournal’s list, which focuses strictly on the domain name value. Even Wikipedia incorrectly lists some of these.
